An impressive footbridge recently opened at the Collie Motorplex was made possible thanks to a $495,000 grant from the Collie & Districts Community Bank.
The new footbridge will allow spectators to safely cross the track to viewing areas during racing. Previously spectators used a tunnel that was shared with vehicles, which posed a safety risk.
Collie & Districts Community Bank branch manager Narelle Michalak said ensuring spectator safety was paramount.
“The construction of the new footbridge is an important stepping stone in the Motorplex’s elevation to a primary sporting centre in Western Australia,” she said.
“The $495,000 grant is one of the largest we have ever given, and it is a pleasure to provide it to one of Collie’s most promising tourist and sporting attractions.
“Providing a safe route for pedestrians is key in spectator safety, and we believe it will allow a much smoother operation during major events.”
Collie & Districts Community Bank chairperson Sarah Stanley said the grant is the result of the support of local customers.
“Today’s announcement further demonstrates the deep connection we have with the Collie community and is a great reminder of the good that banking locally can do when profits are returned to benefit local people and their communities,” she said.
“This grant is one of many significant investments we’ve made since the Collie Community Bank opened in 2001, totalling more than $6 million.”
The construction of the footbridge is part of plans to improve the entire Motorplex in coming years.
Shire of Collie chief executive officer David Blurton said the improved facilities were a vital addition.
“The new pedestrian bridge at the Collie Motorplex has been a great outcome for users of the Motorplex facility,” he said.
“Not only does it improve safety for spectators entering and leaving the venue, but it has enabled new parking areas to be developed closer to the venue itself.
“It continues the Council’s commitment to support the ongoing improvement of facilities at the Collie Motorplex with a view to attracting higher standard of events and a greater number of visitors to Collie. The Collie Motorplex truly is a unique opportunity for the Collie community and one which has substantial potential.”
